Since 1983:  The Institute for Grapevine Breeding Geilweilerhof (ZR) is engaged in the inventory of Vitis species, varieties and other Vitis genotypes existing in the grapevine collections world-wide, leading to the establishment of the Vitis International Variety Catalogue (VIVC).

The NGR website has been created with funding from the Viticulture Consortium West and the American Vineyard Foundation. – The NGR was created in response to grape industry demand for a single comprehensive site listing all grape plant material available within the United States. Quarantine regulations and the high cost of bringing in new stock from abroad make it critical for growers and researchers to be able to locate existing material already in the US.This site was created to make it easier for interested parties to find domestic sources for diverse varieties and clones and to identify material which has been tested and certified as clean in regard to certain grapevine diseases.
